Things you might be wondering,
things others have asked in the past.

  • Q: How does the matchmaking process work?

A: Our clients have come to us looking for love and after a thorough screening and interview process, we determine whether they're a good match for JALBC. Once they become clients, we get to work looking for matches. Sometimes the matches are people we know already, friends of friends, people who've responded to our ads, or people visiting this site, just like you.

  • Q: How do I become a client?

A: In order to become a client, please e-mail cupid@justalittleblackcard.com and tell us what you're looking for in your love life. We'll respond within 24-48 hours.

  • Q: How much does it cost to become a matchmaking client?

A: We never bill and tell, but we will say this: we currently offer 3 tiers of service, which vary in price. Please call the office for that information.

  • Q: Can I speak to one of your clients about the service? I want to hear more about you and the company?

A: Maybe. Probably. It's up to them. We'll be happy to ask. But remember, confidentiality is the most important thing we offer (aside from our expertise).

  • Q: Can I join the JALBC database and be set up on a date?

A: Yup. Send an e-mail to cupid@justalittleblackcard.com and we will respond within 24-48 hours with our one page match profile sheet. Once we review your profile sheet, we'll ask you to send us a recent photo and the next step is scheduling an in-person interview with either Mel or one of her assistants.

  • Q: Is this confidential?

A: Absolutely! Our client and match information is sworn to secrecy. Photos are for internal use only and we will never share them with anyone unless we have your explicit permission. We never discuss who our clients are and when it comes to dates, no last names or identifying details are exchanged. Discrete is our middle name.

  • Q: What kind of clients do you serve?

A: Our clients are all success, desirable Chicago professionals. Right now, our clients are as young as 24 and as young as 65. Unlike some other firms, we don't discriminate based on sexual orientation — we believe everyone should have a chance at finding love. We require three things from our clients:

    • 1. You must be looking for a serious, committed relationship. We are not a dating service.
    • 2. You must be addiction free from alcohol and drugs.
    • 3. You must be willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to have a successful experience with us.
    • That means attending your interviews and honestly answering questions, responding to feedback, etc.
  • Q: Where are you located?

A: We have office space in River North (our office is currently being remodeled for the next few weeks) and the main office is located at Mel's, somewhere on the North Side. All potential match interviews and client interviews can either be held at the River North location but we love the cozy feel of a quiet cafe or wine bar too!

  • Q: Who writes the blog?

A: Mel writes the blog with occasional guest posts from other dating experts.

  • Q: What makes you qualified to do what you do?

A: Tough question. Read more about Mel here. To make a long story short, Mel's been writing relationship blogs for years and when she moved to Chicago, she started working as a dating coach. After a stint in the pick-up artist scene (surely you've heard of The Game), M decided she loved love and now works exclusively as a dating coach and matchmaker.

  • Q: A dating coach? What is that??

A: You're familiar with the concept of coaching. There are life coaches, basketball coaches, executive coaches, all kinds of coaches. So why not dating coaching? A dating coach is just another item in your dating toolbox. My favourite analogy for coaching was given by a friend recently and he said: "Surely, if Roger Federer were to play tennis against his coach, he'd wipe the courts with him. But, that doesn't mean that coach doesn't help him develop his tennis serve" We learn from you as much as you learn from us! Mel specialises in coaching those who want to work on their confidence and also those re-entering the dating world after a divorce. (Yes, things have changed!)

  • Q: What if I want Mel to coach me?

A: Private individual coaching availability is limited so please call the office to discuss rates.
